The pushbutton on the left, if original, would be for the windshield washer
option. The switch to the right of that was for optional lighting; I
originally figured fog/driving lights, but have since seen Rootes
documentation that there was an engine compartment light option for the
S.II.

The "H" or "N" knob that you describe sounds like it's in the choke
position. This should be a pull rather than turn knob. The hole to the
right of that (LHD car) is for the ignition switch.

The switches on the steering column are the turnsignal and optional
overdrive. Having an OD switch is a good sign, since this is the nicest
option to have on an Alpine driver.
