Not easy without hand-waving and pictures, but here's a start:

OFFSET is used here is Australia, but you Mercans seem to talk mostly of
BACKSPACE.

Conceptually, OFFSET is how far off-centre the mounting face of the
wheel-hub is compared to the width of the wheel.

Example:
If I have a 6in wide wheel with 1in positive offset, then the mounting
face of the wheel hub is 2in in from the shiny side of the mag-wheel,
and 4in in from the side that goes toward the car.

Conceptually, BACKSPACE is the 4in figure in the example above. That is
the distance from the mounting face of the wheel-hub to the side of the
wheel that goes towards the car (ie the SPACE at the BACK of the wheel).

BUT, BACKSPACE is actually measured from the tyre mounting surface, not
the edge of the wheel where you'd normally hang the balance weights. So
it's that bit harder to measure. I think Jarrid said to allow about
0.25in for the mounting flange thickness when you try to measure
BACKSPACE.

OK, Jarrid, how'd I do? Was I paying attention during that spate of
emails a year or so ago?
Cheers,
Paul.
