<< Hello alpiners
I drove to the hardware store, ten miles on the interstate, on the way
noticed the smell of gear lube. Well on leaving the store there was a
large puddle of oil under the rear end and plenty more joining it. Drove
it home and crawled under for a look. Lets just say that the underside
in that area is in no danger of rusting anytime soon. So what is broken
now, pinion seal, is there a vent that could be stopped up. I could not
really tell where the leak is looks like maybe the top side of the
differential but could also be around the pinion. It was leaking just a
very little before but this is a very steady leak. Any help is
 appreciated thank you. jim 66SV

Most likely the front pinion seal, but.....

Also, are the bolts holding the differential to the housing tight? This
gasket can and will leak, particularly if the housings been dented.

Does the housing show any cracks? (one of my banjo tubes cracked wide open
last year)
