Progress 2

Spent a little time on the car this weekend. I swapped the rear ends,
springs and all. If you ever do this, just a simple hint, which most
probably already know, besides unbolting the four eyebolts at each end of
the springs, to put it back on, you really need to loosen the U-bolt clamps
that hold the springs to the differential. Fortunately, I figured this out
after only a few minutes of struggling to figure out how to get the spring
ends to line up into the mounting brackets.

As to differences, I did note that on the S3, there were these large flat
rubber insolators/washers that fit on each end of the front spring eye
bushing. These washers were not on the SV. I actually don't know that
they do anything anyway. I guess the idea is that they stop the edges of
the front spring from rubbing against the sides of the mounting bracket
that sandwich the front spring. But, it seems to me that the center tube
that the bolt goes though is wider than the spring itself, the mounting
bracket sides can only go to the end of those tubes, and only in extreme
lateral forces can the springs torque and hit the bracket.

The only other difference I noted was that the emergency brake cable worked
differently and had a different braket welded on to the rear of the
differential housing. The S3 has two cables meeting in the center of the
rear housing, while the SV has the cable to all the way to the right side
wheel, and has a solid rod that is on the right wheel that goes to the
center of the differential housing.

As to the hammer mounting position, I did look in the back of the S3, and
sure enough, there is one hole up and to the left of the tool roll mounting
holes. I have extra clips from the jack on the S5. I'll see if one of
those might hold the hammer. Otherwise, I'm looking for one of those.

P.S. Just sort of a side note, I washed the driveway this weekend and
notice gazillions of ants climing up out of one of the cracks. So, when it
dried, I pour ant killer down the crack. Sure enough, this morning, when I
pulled the car cover off of my 911, it was CRAWLING with ants!!! THEY'RE
AFTER ME!!!! Actually, now that the suspension and engine, etc., are all
swapped on the Alpines, this weekend the old SV is getting rolled out of
the garage and the 911 can happily get tucked back inside. It has not
taken these past few weeks well.
