wire wheel clunk

While I have been shining up my new chrome wires I have been
wondering what to do with the old ones which look great but suffer from
bad splines. Tell me if you think this is stupid or dangerous but I want
to drill holes through the splined area of the wheel to mate to the
cotter pin access holes in the hub and then fit bolts through those
holes to stop the clunk.
Has anyone tried this? I so , then I won't need to . I am only
doing it out of curiosity to see if there is a cheap fix for those who
are plagued by this problem.
My other thought is to use the old wheels for Christmas tree
stands. They have to work better than anything else I've used in the
past.
