I probably should clarify for the benefit of US listers, since they never
received the Alpine hatchback. The fourth generation Alpine (following on
from the "Mark" Alpine, "Series" Alpine and "fastback" Alpine) was a five
door hatchback - a family car this time with no real sporting pretensions.
Unlike its predecessors, it was never sold with Sunbeam badges (except
possibly in export markets). They were Chrysler Alpines up until Chrysler
sold the Rootes Group to Peugeot, and then they became Talbot Alpines.
It won the European Car of the Year award at its launch, but unfortunately
doesn't seem to be held in high regard anymore. This is a shame since I
owned one up until a few months ago and found it to be quite a nice car,
although not terribly exciting.
