Hello Alpines:
On the suggestion of a couple of listers, in an attempt to get my Series
V overdrive trans. to shift better into 1st and second (on occasion
almost impossible to get it into 1st), I switched from 30 weight oil in
it to 20-50 weight. The end result is the overdrive seems to take just a
bit longer to engage with the 20-50, but still in an acceptable time.
However, here's the interesting part: When the car is cold, it seems
like there's a definite improvement in shifting into first. However, as
the car warms up, it gets progressively harder to get into 1st (and to a
lesser extent 2nd). I can't quite figure out the logic as to why this is
the case. I wonder if I should switch back to straight 30 weight, or
maybe try straight 40 weight. Any ideas or experience with this? I hope
I'm not looking at having to re-open up the trans. after rebuilding it
just a couple of months ago.
Here's a "tech" tip that should have been obvious to me. My Alpine (with
dual Strombergs) was starting to "buck" under acceleration, not quite
missing or "burping", but almost. I figured it was time to go through
the Strombergs again when I remembered I hadn't changed the plugs in a
couple of years (and this car is my daily driver so it gets lots of
use). The plugs looked pretty normal (a nice clean brown color to all of
them) but, what the heck, I'm a big spender so I paid about six dollars
for a new set, gapped them to .025 and in they went. It now runs like a
new car, starts better, idles smoother and accelerates all the way up
with no hesitation. I only mention this in case any of you out there are
as brilliant a "mechanic" as I am!
