I did my overdrive rear seal last year, but I had the 'box/OD out of the
car at the time. Yes, you need to unbolt the exhaust to lower the back
end of the gearbox. Also watch the carb linkage, fan-radiator clearance,
rad hoses, etc.
I removed the circlip, tried prying, bought a dent puller (slide hammer)
and make a small hook for it, all to no avail. I ended up removing the
rear housing and using a long punch to drive the seal out from inside.
Be very careful not to score the bush in there or the ally lip that
holds the circlip. It was not a pretty job. Others said the seal should
just pop out but mine was solid. I didn't use heat (ally casing, brass
bush, no thanks), but that's about the only trick I didn't try.
