One thing I've found as a good indicator of fuel problems, if the time the
engine is left before trying to restart, affects how long it will run before
conking out the next time, a fuel blockage is very likely. While the car is
sitting, fuel has time to trickle through while it is (or idling slowly) and
supply the engine for longer. How much this affects it can also give an
indication of how far from the carbs the blockage is, and how severe it is.
Driving harder will also speed up the dying process. I had one car that
wouldn't sustain speeds over 40mph until I found a small blockage in the tap
before the fuel pump.
