Starter

Recently ,,,well now also when I pulled the tranny and the starter has
to come out , I decided to have it rebuilt. Works great. The Question I
have is, On the opposite end of the gear, the end of the thru shaft is a
square about 3/8-1/2 " . Is this for a reason , like in case the starter
gets frozen up you can break it loose . And if so is there a tool for
that? My starter appears to be the original as it has never been taken
apart and has 2-63 on it? Thus the questions?
