I've now found the gas leak and its coming from a site I don't believe anyone
has listed as a source. My car has always had a persistent smell of gas in the
trunk strongest above the right (filler side) tank. Replacing the filler hose
(twice) and sheathing the breather pipe in fuel hose hasn't helped. Today the
smell was worse than ever and the thought of this explosive mix in the trunk
with the nearby Lucas taillight electricals drove me to pull the tanks.
In the base of both tanks is a drain plug and the right side one has been
leaking. Not alot but enough to cause the bad smell. Some surface rust over the
tanks but no other leaks.
I'll solder the right tank up and then wire brush the tanks, treat them with
rust killer and paint them. I would appreciate any advice as to best paint and
whether or not I should treat the tanks with a tank sealer (?POR 15). If I do
this I will have to remove the fuel gauge float from the left tank. It looks
like I just turn this to remove it. But could someone just confirm this before I
wreck it .
