My Alpine got pretty toasted under the hood.
It was really pretty sweet when I got it, except that top speed in 4th
gear left quite a bit to be desired..... I'd like to do something with
the ignition system and the carbs. Any words of advice?

Jon, Congratulations on surviving the conflagration! If you are
looking for replacement carbs there are some strombergs for sale on ebay
or a series 4 intake on ebay that you could mate with a weber 32/36. The
weber is very reliable, available and reasonably priced .
You should go to a pertronix electronic ignition available at SS or
Classic Sunbeam.
A little more top end can be achieved by replacing what is probably
a 4.22 rear end in your car with a 3.89. I just saw one for $70 on the
list the other day. If you can find a 3.70 from an Alpine GT automatic,
so much the better.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
