FWIW, I have two diametrically opposed opinions from two professional
mechanics that I trust. The guy who works on my Porsche, and restores all
sorts of wild cars for a living, said to leave it stock unless I wanted it
louder. The guy who prepped racing and street Lotuses for a living, and
rebuilt my Holbay engine, said 2". He runs 2.25" on his Elan, and dyno's
everything. (Note I said "prepped". He told me today that he isn't
working on customers cars anymore because of some great results on the
stock market. Geeeze.) We talked about the fact that the Elan is cross
flow, and that he is racing it. He responded that it's really a street car
and about 135 hp, which he said years ago he thought my car would come in
at (but again that was only his guess, and it was not dyno'ed), and was
very insistent about 2". I know one of you guys responded that you've
been running 2" for years with fine results. Well, I guess it will be a
flip of the coin when the decision comes.
P.S. The first guy's opinion was based upon me not changing the manifold.
With changing the manifold, he did believe I'd need the larger pipe, but
didn't have a guess on size.
