Thankyou all for your varied and valued suggestions, the pulley finally
came off last night.
It was a particually stubborn nut.
I tried the car in 4th gear and the hand brake on but the clutch slipped.
I tried an air hammer but that didn't shift it.
In the end I held onto a pair of stiltsons? which were placed into one of
the open sections of the pulley and a fellow enthusiatic used an 1 1/8 "
socket on the longest bar ever and it finally moved.
The timing cover was a another matter. I did't want to remove the water
pump, having only just sorted a problamatic water leak, and so one bolt
proved particually challenging.
The suggestion to put the car on it's roof may have helped with removing
this.
Many Thanks
Dave
