The instructions on hydraulic floor jacks or on jacks supplied with
automobiles can be misleading by stating that you should support your
car with jacks stands before working under it . Misleading because the
jack stands themselves will have a warning that they are not
appropriate to safely protect you while working underneath a car. I
cringe whenever I think of having relied on these things in the past.
What I use now ( which seems safer but please speak up if you know
of some danger) is two sets of ramps. I drive the car up on the front
ones then jack up the rear end under the differential and slip the other
pair under the rear wheels. I face the down side of the rear ramps
forward so the car would have to jump the lip of the ramp to get loose.
The particular ones I use put the tire 8" off the ground which gives
about 14" of frame to ground clearance. That's enough space to drop the
transmission and bell housing and be able to slide it out from under the
car.
