Ian,
    Take the crown gear tooth count and divide it by the pinion gear tooth
count. In simple terms, 40 (crown) divided by 10 (pinion) = 4.0
(4.0:1)

    Installed the car, if you have an open differential you can do it too:
lift one wheel and put the tranny in neutral. Have someone rotate the lifted
wheel while you watch and count the rotations of the driveshaft. He counts
turns while you do. When your count reaches 10 rotations, do the math. Then
divide by 2 because with one tire on the ground, the differential has doubled
the result.
    For a posi or locker type differential you need to lift both wheels and
do the simple division without dividing by 2.
