It's exactly what it says it is. No offense, it's also known as the "idiot
light." When it's on, the alternator is not charging - or your "alternator
warning light simulator" is not working. The light should only go on when
you turn the key to "on" but before you hit the starter. It should stay on
through starting and then shut off when the car is running and the
alternator is charging the battery, rather than the battery running the
starter and light. I suspect that since you don't mention your car is
having a problem running, which it would in short order if that light was
accurate, your simulator is probably not working. They are available from
