clutch master cylinder rebuild

Nothing ever seems to go smoothly!

After installing the new return spring recommended by the listers and
supplied by the local SAAB dealership, I was careful to lubricate (with
that special Lucas brake fluid) all the new rubber pieces, and then I
reassembled the master cylinder.

The trouble is, the piston does not move completely freely always, and
sometimes sticks halfway, therefore making it impossible to complete the
bleeding of the system and test the clutch. Is this the result of the
new seals being extra firm and tight? Do I just have to keep working it
to loosen it up? Or could this be a more major problem with the cylinder
shaft itself?

I want to make sure that I installed the new "o" ring correctly. I
assumed that the flared end should face the end of the master cylinder
that faces the engine compartment. Correct? Or should the flared end
face the direction that faces the car interior? Does that little washer
have to go it a certain way?

Several years ago I rebuilt the brake master cylinder, and I do not
remember having any issues such as this.

I hope someone can help me out with some ideas. Thank you all in
advance. I have the workshop manual, but sometimes the British lingo is
confusing.
