need help with dual horns

When I took ownershp of my Series 5 it had one non-working horn. I
just came in from the garage after struggling with the wiring for my 2
new horns. I thought this would be a no brainer. Just plug them in and
go.
I have a couple simple questions and then if anyone is interested,
a description of my tangled mess.
    1) Do the horns work with the ignition off?
    2) Do the brake lights work with the ignition off?

My fusebox ( not original? ) has two switched fuses and 4
unswitched. The left horn is wired to a switched fuse. It's green wire
also powers the turn signals.
The right horn is wired to an unswitched fuse. It's green wire also
carries power to the brake switch.
When I connect both horns , the alternator warning light glows
mildly ( with the ignition off ). In this settup the horns honk loud and
clear.
I moved the unswitched green wire ( right horn and brake switch )
to a switched fuse and while I have solved the problem with the warning
light the horns don't honk as loudly.
   Any suggestions?
