Rob,
The original thickness of the brake rotors was half-an-inch, 0.500".
Earlier versions of the shop manuals said it was OK to remove up to 0.020
inch from either side, yielding a minimum thickness of 0.460", but there was
some stipulation about final dimensions:
"The maximum that can be removed from either side of the disc is 0.020 in.
(0.51mm); with reference to Fig. 3b, dimension "A" should not be less than
0.852 in. (21.64 mm) and dimension "B" not more tha 0.392 in. (9.96 mm)."
In Fig. 3b, dimension "A" was the total thickness of the rotor, measured from
the inboard mounting surface to the outboard surface of the disc itself.
Dimension "B" was the distance between the inboard mounting surface and the
inboard surface of the disc itself.
Later versions of the shop manuals deleted these specifications and simply
said that the rotors should be replaced with new units.
