Ian's generator problem

Hey everyone,
I hope all had a nice Sunday today. Ian came over with his Harrington
"A" to change his old shocks for some new Konis and to fix his
non-charging generator problem. Well, let me run down as to what we
tried. First, I tried to polarize the generator by placing a jumper from
the field terminal on the regulator ("F") to the battery ("A") terminal,
"momentarily". Got a spark and asked Ian to start the engine and check
the amp meter. It didn't work. Now, after reading in a old Peterson
publication from '69 (one that I bought long ago), it said to polarized
the generator by using the Amp/Gen terminal (which is different then
what everyone said to do). So I went and did that, but still didn't
work. We removed the regulator and cleaned the contacts and then did
some trouble shooting. First, with the engine running, I energized the
field with a jumper connected from the battery "A" terminal. The amp
meter deflected to indicate the generator was charging. Then removed the
jumper (normal operation again), observing the actual relay movements,
the field relay was closing and opening depending on engine speed, which
seemed normal. The regulator relay seemed to function normal too, but no
charging. But, when I jump the battery to the field terminal on the
regulator, the generator started charging; Remove the jumper, no
charging. So there still is something not right here. Any ideas?
Jan
