Sunbeamers,
Thanks to those who reponded to my request fo help. I have not, as yet, had
an opportunity to try out some of the suggestions, but I hope to this coming
weekend. In answer to some of the questions asked:
1. I am running a standard fuel pump.
2. At one stage I pulled the air cleaners off and found raw fuel running out
the throat of one of the carbies.
3. I have replaced the floats to no effect.
4. Peter, the interesting thing is that the car was running fine before the
clean-up and the only things I touched were the carbies.
5. In my over twenty years of ownership I have had two under-bonnet fires.
The first was many years ago when the o-rings at the bottom of the carbies
were leaking slightly and, being young and foolish, I chose to put off the
job. Then one windless day, I parked the car for some time, the fumes built
up under the bonnet, I got back in, turned the key and (I surmise) the
sparks from the commutator in the starter motor ignited the fumes. I think
this is basically what happened the second time, only I had no warning - a
leak must have just started. It happened in a service station - the guy at
the counter nearly had a heart attack!

On another matter, my late SII has its ID plate held on with rivets.
