That is probably the gear lash from the rear end. The ring/pinon and
spider gears are the main contributors to what you describe. It's had to
say if it is abnormal amount. My '85 Chevy pickup has an excessive
amount and I found that the spider gears are excessively worn. It makes
a clank noise when on the gas and off the gas when the oil warms up from
normal driving. It also has the sloppy play that you mention too.
