SAL stands for "Sunbeam Assembly Line." Rootes sometimes contracted
production of their vehicles to other carmakers when Rootes themselves
didn't have the capacity on their own production lines. Probably the
best-known example of this is the Tiger. It was built by Jensen.
(Jensen actually made most of its money building other people's cars!
Some examples are Tiger, early Volvo P1800, and Austin-Healey 3000.
There's an interesting photo in one of my Jensen books which shows the
Tiger, AH3000, and Jensen CV-8 all being built side-by-side in the
same plant.) Thus Tigers have a JAL number instead of SAL. I'm not
aware of any other xAL designations on any of the other car lines in
the Rootes stable, but it would not surprise me to learn that
Hillmans, Humbers, and Singers had different xAL plates.
