1982 Solo II Nationals, Marriott's Great America Amusement Park, Gurnee,
Ill., Sept. 9-12. Host, Chicago Region.
Just before the finish on Course A. It was the first time most competitors
had seen the device, hence it became called a Chicago Box.
That event -- the 10th renewal of the Solo Nationals -- was notable for a
few other things.
* It was the first four-day Nationals (although not midweek, it was
Thursday-Sunday)
* It was the only Nationals held to date on an actual parking lot (all
others being on race tracks or airports [some were both], and once on a
fairground's access roads)
* It was the last Nationals (until next year) run on asphalt.
* It was the last Nationals not held in Kansas, signaling the end of the
event's nomadic days.
