Right you are Chris - 351W

The normal oil filter for the 351W will NOT fit. You need the short one.
I did the same thing. From the web page:
"Motorcraft FL-300 (Note: FL-1A was too long)"

No, it is NOT the water pump. That is the smog pump. There should be a
large rubber hose comming out the back and going to a silverish canister
mounted between the alt. and the fender well. This canister will rout
the air from the smog pump to a pipe on the back of the eng. It's very
difficult to see with the eng. in the car, but there is a tube that goes
between the 2 head and the smog pump attaches to that. If the smog pump
is disconnected, this tube will have a tendency to get very hot and
fail. Don't remember what the results are, but over heating is not one
of them.

How hot is hot? And how quickly? If you are really getting hot, quick and
the temp can't be controlled below 212, then my guess would be a blown
head gasket. You can do a compression check to see if the head gasket
is blown or not.
