The spacer fits on the shaft, the T/O bearing fits on the shaft also, pushing
against the spacer. The T/O bearing is internally threaded & has an internal
threaded sleeve to provide final spacing which is minutely adjustable. You
should have received an instruction sheet which gives the distance from the
face of the bearing to the clutch fingers. Once set, the spacing will not
change. Rubber O rings hold the inner sleeve on the transmission shaft &
prevent it from rotating. The "finger" you bolt to the face of the trans, as
well as the braided lines, keep the outer portion of the bearing from rotating.
The Buick bell housing has a removable cover which allows inspection &
measurement of the initial bearing to clutch gap. Once in service, this gap
disappears, & the bearing rides lightly against the clutch fingers. It is
designed this way, & has given me no trouble in over 100,000 miles.
