Hello Pieter,
The person to give you a proper explanation is Franc Buxton (Stunned
Buffalo Racing). He is a professor at Oxford who likes to play in the racing
arena, and has a 390 BHP SD1. Go to
http://www.stunnedbuffalo.demon.co.uk/sbr.html

>From what I know, the idle air mixture stepper motor that sits on the back of
the plenum controls the cold and warm idle speed, and on cold startup, the
engine should run a bit higher in RPM, then back down to normal idle as you
indicate. Maybe 2000 RPM is a bit high for cold startup, so it sounds like
something else is going on, like another air leak into the engine. Have you
checked all your vacuum and crankcase ventilation lines for holes?
