I align my headlights this way.  I dont use a wall.  I wait till it is dark
out, then I park on a streetand aim the right(curb) headlight as far as I
can keeping it illumed on the ground and off about 5 foot to the right, So
it will be illuminating the shoulder when you drive.  The bright spot should
be on the line if you are in the middle of the lane.
The left one I put directly in front of the car to the center, and out as
far as I can but keeping the bright spot on the pavement.  If you put it too
close to the car, you will be overdriving your headlights at a higher rate
of speed. If you move it to the left of center it will be a hazard to
oncoming traffic, and more so with your bright lights on.  If you need to
Adjust, take a mental note while you are driving.
