Don't know of many advantages and can't speak for the rest of the country,
since we rarely get snow in SF on the left coast. But I switch to 160 in
the warmer months so the thermostat opens quicker to do it's cooling stuff.
In the winter, I want the opposite effect so I put in the 180, as I want
the engine to get hotter quicker for better performance; also a heater can
pull some heat from the engine and the thermostat keeps more of the needed
heat in the engine.
In any event, be sure your thermostat has a relief hole to allow some fluid
to circulate even when the thermostat is closed.
