Alan,
The 44 PHH Solex carbs used on the Mercedes 190 SL and also the Alfa Romeo
2600 are are staged two barrel carbs. These have independent throttle shafts
for each carb throat, runs on one throat most of the time, the 2nd barrel
comes into play at high rpm/load via a vacuum diaphram (similar to
progressive 4-barrel). The primary and secondary throats are different
diameter (something like 24 and 37mm). These could be modified to work on
roadster manifold but it would be expensive. If you want a lower cost
alternative to Solex, go with Webers.
