Sounds like something is definitely amiss there.
About that lower chain guide: lots of people leave it off because it does
seem to break occasionally. Which makes me think it is actually needed,
otherwise how would it break off if it wasn't doing anything?
If there's a really good welder in your area, have him weld a little
reinforcement onto the base. He'll have to be careful to localize the heat
so it doesn't damage the rubbing face.
