A manifold can be either intake or exhaust. A header usually means a "tube
header" which is an exhaust manifold made out of steel tubing. This was to
distinguish it from old stock exhaust manifolds which were quite often made
of cast iron (1950's Detroit technology).

It's not that uncommon for a header (stock or otherwise) to burn out and
develop cracks and pinholes over time.

The stock 2000 exhaust manifold is known to be a very good design as far as
flow characteristics go, so it won't hurt to stick with a stock one if
that's your choice. And the Solex and SU cars used the same exhaust
manifold.
