shocks

hi, all.
   
  quick question, i hope.
   
  i have an early 67 low windshield 1600 roadster.  the po rolled the fenders 
and put larger tires and wheels on it.  i don't know the history of the shocks, 
so i'd like to go ahead and replace them while the body is off.  i'd like 
something stiffer than stock, maybe up to autocross stiffness, but certainly 
not race.  i really just plan to street drive the car, but i'd like to improve 
the handling.
   
  would someone who has btdt give me a recommendation?
