Thanks John, I may just do that anyway with something a little nicer than a
coat hanger. I didn't think of a secondary back up. But while the car is
waiting to have the motor put back together, I want to fix/replace the existing
cable and handle, that way it is done.

For safety, here's what I recommend: right now, while the hood can
still be opened, install an emergency release.
