R16 Early - Later Cam Gear Interchange

Can anyone tell me if the early / late cam gears are interchangeable on my
early (3 main) R16 ? I know the early gear is SAE and the late gear is
metric,
but except for the bolt at the end of the camshaft, where does SAE or metric
make a difference in swapping?

Aren't all the R16 camshafts interchangeable, (same bearings, length,
diameter, etc.)?
