Try it with washing soda (aka sodium carbonate) and you'll get much better
results.

That's basically how I've removed rust from large parts. I used baking
soda, got a large bag cheap from Costco. Bought a long plastic tub for
about $7. About 8 gallons water and a tablespoon baking soda per gallon
water. I got better results from hanging multiple steel plates around
the inside of the tub, all attached to the positive lead of a battery
charger. Attach the negative lead to the auto part(s). Be sure to keep
the positive lead out of the water, so just the sacrificial steel plates
get corroded. Leave the rig outside for a couple days with a 2amp
current flow and all the rust goes away. After that, blow off the excess
water and use a heat gun to dry the part(s) before sealing with paint.
