How much work are you comfortable doing yourself? Have you ever disassembled a
motor? You have to pull the motor to take it to a machine shop which, requires
a lot of wrenching and mechanical skills. Once you've gone that far, placing
the engine on an engine stand and breaking it down isn't much more work. Once
it's on an engine stand you can pull the oil pan, pull the cylinder head,
check the crankshaft, etc. However, you're getting very involved at that
point.

If that sounds like too much to take on, you should see if you can get a local
mechanic to tear it down for you. Too bad, you don't live closer. I'd help you
do it.
