Russell,

With the cars which have come to my garage running poorly, I have always 
gone through a complete tune-up, starting with valve adjustments, then 
dismantling the distributor (on the bench) to check and lubricate the 
mechanical advance.  New points, plugs and condenser, possibly plug wires. 
Set the timing with a good DC powered light.  Then I set the carbs.  Balance 
the air flow first, then set the mixture.  Some cannot be adjusted properly 
as a result of throttle shaft wear, or contact/wear between the needles and 
nozzles.  It's not a huge investment in either money or time, but it pays 
dividends when you don't have to ask yourself whether its the ignition, 
carburetion, or whatever.  FWIW.

No, I am not a professional mechanic -- self-taught many years ago when I 
bought my first roadster.
