The soldering iron is used as a heat source.
Of course the use of "tin/lead solder" as such is not possible, but a 
small sliver of compatible plastic can be applied as a welding filler.
Plastic welding is an art I haven't tried yet, but theoretically, once 
you identify what type of plastic you have, a heat source and the 
appropriate filler can be used to repair cracks and such.
