I have seen "side-pipes" and under frame "side-exit" setups with
4-cylinder/6-cylinder roadsters

Here is Jeff T's side pipe in detail:
flex/pipe below frame rail:

Muffler:

Fender exit:

Here is Raul L's true twin-side-pipe setup. Note how close exhaust is to
ground, totally under bodywork:

Finally, go here to see a side-exit setup on Alex C's SRL:

if you can't log in here his a YouTube Video of the exhaust sound:

some pics, this has a standard exhaust routing through the crossmember, but
cross under the frame just before the rear tire:

reasons for doing it:
-could simplify exhaust routing
-could run larger diameter piping
-looks cool?
-sound

reasons for not doing:
-sound
-heat/burned body parts
-fumes
-looks
-ground clearance
