Dear Dave:
Been there, bought the farm.
There are two different axle assemblies. One has a wide key and
one has a narrow key. The narrow key is only about 1/4 inch wide. The
wide key is over 3/8 wide.
I now use only the wide key, with old style axles that require a
castle nut and a cotter pin.
