Hi,

Well, I didn't AutoX the TR6 this weekend.... it's poppin' out of third 
on hard decelleration. Looks like a broken top-hat bushing again. FWIW, 
it's a good thing that I didn't try using that car in the AutoX, there 
were several 3rd gear sections on the course - I saw >60 MPH on two 
sections in my Saturn... yee hah! Third gear sweepers are sort of tough 
when you have to use one hand to keep the car in gear and the other to 
drive, but I digress.

Anyway, I have a question for the greater body.

As we all should know, big TR trannies have this minor problem with the 
second gear top-hat bushing breaking off when you slam the gears... at 
least I _hope_ we know that. At any rate, my buddy John Esposito of 
Quantum Mechanics tells me that he usually swaps in a late TR6 steel 
top-hat bushing to remedy this problem. However, the cost is that you 
need to swap in the second gear from the later tranny and, of course, the 
corresponding layshaft gear.

That's kool I comprehend this entirely. But it's kind of expensive, 
figure $40 for the steel bush and another $50 or so for a 2nd 
main/layshaft gear set. So, $100 for the whole kit-n-kaboodle.

However, I look in the Moss TRS07 catalogue and see that Moss offers part 
number 848-575 as a steel replacement for the brass 848-580 piece. And it 
only lists for $32, more or less.

My question is: has anyone on the list used this steel part (848-575) and 
can they report that it is any more/less functional than the brass one 
(848-580) or going to the later gear and stock late steel bushing???

This is the third or fourth bushing that I've broken. Now, while I have
learned how to tear-down a big TR6 tranny, I would like to make this 'box
a little more stout - Khartu will have quite a bit more power than stock,
and I don't want to make swapping the tranny a regular maintenance item. 
Or if I have to do that, I'd like to put three or four 'boxes together so
that I can just swap them in as needed, as opposed to having the car down
for weeks at a time while I gather parts... I drove one of those broken
trannies for a lot of miles one year (at least 4000 miles), and the result
was _not_ pretty. The main shaft, second gear, synchro hub, spacer washer
and misc. other stuff cost about $300 for the parts and, of course, the
requesite three or four hours to put it all back together again. 

So, I'd like to get this one "right" or I'd like to set up a suitable 
replacement scenario.
