Obviously Mrs. Shilling is now posthumously remembered as the engineer who
won the Battle of Britain and bested the engineers of Rolls Royce.
... A very amusing anecdote, but unfortunately smacking of
the same antiquated attitude that characterizes the recent statement
of Alan Baker, manager of an Aston Martin dealership in the Mayfair
district of London. Mr. Baker is quoted in today's New York Times
regarding his customers who buy Aston Martin DB7's. "Then there's the
image. You're immediately considered to be a gentleman if you drive an
Aston Martin."
The Times article on Ford's mission to make Aston Martin
a sports car competitor of Ferrari also illustrates an ungentlemanly
persona, actually rather delicate, gripping the top of the steering wheel
quite firmly with both hands, as she pilots the new V12 DB7 Vantage
Volante at speed. Mrs. Shilling would approve, I'm quite sure.
