That mainshaft is my problem, I suspect.  The TR4 OD shaft I have located

a good used one for $100.

If it were me, I would use the TR-4 mainshaft and the brass top hat 
bushings.  This is the combination I used in my race car for 24 years, and 
never had a failure.  I think the top hat bushing failure is a high mileage 
issue.  I have never seen one fail after I have rebuilt a transmission and 
maintained it properly.
 I suspect I can get the later one from John
Esposito, (neat guy, I've been to his shop for a tech session) but I am 
sure
it will be a whole bunch more expensive.

He wants $250, plus a core (stock) mainshaft.
  This is OK, IF the steel top hat
bushings justify the other shaft.  This is still an issue I am wrestling
with.  Please let me know what you think, if you feel comfortable with
making a judgement.  The bottom line was that I was unsure if I could get a
mainshaft that I could use with both the steel tophat bushings and the
A-type OD.  I believe you are dismissing this concern.

OK, so the A and J type OD's take a common input????

No, the mainshaft for an A-Type is different than the one for the J-Type. 
 However, the A-type mainshaft will fit the later gearboxes.  Therefore, if 
you have a later gearbox (with the steel top hat bushings), you can 
disassemble the gearbox, install an A-Type mainshaft (must have the .835 
nose diameter) and use it with an A-Type overdrive.
  I ask because the
later TR6 boxes used J-types, not A's.  The TRF book shows the different
sized needle bearings only.

BTW - Have you considered replacing the needle bearings with bushings?

I believe that would be a step backwards.  The TR-2's and early TR-3's used 
a bushing, where the mainshaft fits into the input shaft.  It was 
subsequently replaced by the needle bearing.  Must have been a reason for 
making that change - surely the needle bearing cost more than the bushing!
