Cary, the registration number is exactly and only that -- the number given by 
the UK automobile registration authorities (similar to the DMV's in the 
states.)  It means that the licensing fee has been collected and the vehicle 
is now legal.  However, two things are interesting about how the UK does it.  
First is that no other car will have that number because it is uniqie to the 
vehicle and stays with the vehicle forever.  The second thing is that you can 
tell a lot from it.  Example - ADU8B means that it was registered in Coventry 
(ADU), the 8 means that it was the 8th car in the ADU series, the final B 
means that it was registered in 1964 ('63 would have an A, '65 would have a 
C).   Some of the UK folks (John Maccartney, in particular ) have much more
