FWIW, I once owned a street TR3A that had the windshield glass replaced with 
Plexiglas (by a DPO), _and_ the center support missing.  The plexi was just 
shoved into the frame without even the original rubber buffer, and AFAIK was 
not heated and bent to match the curvature of the frame (it flattened out when 
removed).  At certain speeds, the center of the frame would vibrate by 1/2" or 
more, yet the plexi never cracked.  I only ran it 3-4 months, as I really 
wanted windshield wipers <g>
