Rob, I have an aluminum cover also. I Glue the gasket to the cover and
then after it drys securely, I coat the bottom surface of the gasket
with permatex black High temp silicone sealant.  I make an even coat
on the gasket.  I let that dry completely and then put the cover on.
The silicone makes a nice seal and does not stick to the head.  Since
I started doing it this way, I have not had any leaks.  Joe(B)
