The felt filter media available at the time would not pass enough oil to
feed the engine (at any reasonable pressure drop). So, the full oil
pressure was applied across the felt filter, and the clean oil returned to
the pan, while the bearings were fed with full pressure oil. Not such a bad
system, since the oil picks up very little dirt on each trip through the
engine. Paper filters don't remove all particles on every pass anyway ...
the biggest drawback of the bypass system is the lack of "rock catcher" at
the filter, but the paper media would quickly clog anyway and the bypass
valve open, with the same result : rocks in the bearings.
