For what it's worth:

When I took my axle to Southwick for the conversion, I asked if they had
a spreader because I hadn't gotten my diff out.  They said, "Nah, we
just put a chain around the diff, hang it all from the chain hoist and
stand on the axle, or jump if we have to."  Sounded sort of "rude and
crude" but apparently it works.  Didn't see the process in action
however.
